Focal Plane is committed to publishing the work of photography teachers and students from institutes of higher education, secondary schools, and community arts organizations.

Contributing Faculty
Submissions are not accepted and faculty are nominated by their peers in the greater academic community. These teachers recognize students by writing an article on their work in the classroom. Contributing faculty also write about a teaching experience, or an educational themed work such as curriculum design, innovative teaching practice, or work completed with students or in support of student learning.

Contributors to Focal Plane nominate two additional faculty members from institutions other than their own for consideration of inclusion in future issues. From these eight nominees the board of directors selects four faculty whom fit together best thematically, aesthetically or geographically.

The target market for Focal Plane magazine is photography educators in higher education institutions and secondary schools along with their students. Distribution is through schools of art & communications, university and college libraries, local retailers and book stores. Subscriptions and individual copies are also sold through the magazine website.

Focal Plane publisher and editor, Gerard Lange, was recently named recipient of the 2018-2019 Regional Artists Project (RAP) Grant awarded through the North Carolina Arts Council. This grant is designed to provide the opportunity for local arts councils to award funding for artists to pursue projects that further their professional development. Lange received this award to support his efforts in publishing this education journal.
